The area on which Beckton is located was once part of the 12,000 acre Holt‐Sutherland Estate, originally a land grant purchased by Thomas Holt.

In 1899 Thomas James Bush took out a 56 year lease at a cost of £1,087. In 1904 Bush built Beckton as a retreat from city life.

A proposed new pavilion will sit adjacent to the 115 year old heritage dwelling residence looking out across the Port Hacking River. A material palette of dark steel cladding allows the additions to meld into the background in an act of subservience to the original grand house. The additions are linked to the by a discreet walkway and covered alfresco courtyard.
